Hermitages

Chapel of Mary Help of Christians

The Hermitage is located in the Puerto de la Encina which is a district of the municipality of Osuna. It has 334 inhabitants.

The village is located 15 km south of the town.

The chapel stands on a plot of municipal land located at the junction of Levante and Llana streets in the hamlet of Puerto de la Encina. The chapel is small, and the rest of the plot has been converted into a public square on the site where a multifunctional building once stood, which served as a classroom, chapel and first-aid station.

Chapel of Our Lady of Consolation of Calvary

The first pilgrimage of our era took place in 1988 with a large crowd of pilgrims, but it was not until 1996 that an addendum to the rules was approved, giving it official status. Since then, pilgrims have made their way to some land belonging to the parish in a spot in the mountains known as El Calvario, as it is located next to the hill and ruins of the old Recollect convent of the same name. The site is located about 8 km along the Martín de la Jara road. A chapel was built here in the 1990s, and it is interesting to note that the initial funds were raised at a previous pilgrimage by raffling a watermelon.

Chapel of Saint Arcadio

17th century. It houses the image of the patron saint of Osuna, San Arcadio. Free admission.

This chapel venerates the image of the patron saint of Osuna, which is carried through the streets of the city every year on 12 January.

The church was built in the 17th century and renovated in the 18th century. Its interior has a single nave, covered with a barrel vault and a dome on pendentives in the transept.

The side walls feature attached pilasters that support an entablature decorated with sumptuous plasterwork. The pendentives of the dome feature representations with plant borders framing the coat of arms of the city of Osuna.

The main altarpiece stands in the chancel and is a Baroque work from the mid-18th century. It features reliefs depicting the martyrdom of several saints from the city of Osuna. The central niche is occupied by Saint Arcadio, patron saint of the town.

In the arms of the transept there are two altarpieces from the second quarter of the 18th century, whose niches house sculptural representations of the Holy Family in one and Tobias with the Angel in the other. On the walls of both arms of the transept there are various paintings framed by fine 18th-century Baroque mouldings.

Several paintings depicting the apostles, dating from the mid-17th century, are distributed throughout the walls of the church.

It currently houses a compulsory secondary school.

Chapel of Saint Anne

Currently closed to the public. Not open for visits.

The foundation of what was once the Monastery of Santa Ana is attributed to Doña María de la Cueva, wife of the fourth Count of Ureña, who had it built for the Poor Clare nuns. As a result of the depopulation of this area, the nuns abandoned it and moved, as mentioned when discussing the former Convent of the Poor Clares, to the convent on Calle de La Huerta. Shortly afterwards, the Mercedarians moved to Santa Ana, where they remained until the Convent of La Merced was built in the square of the same name. The Monastery of Santa Ana was abandoned and fell into ruin until D. Luís de Figueroa undertook its reconstruction, reducing the church and convent to the current chapel.

In 1746, the image of Saint Anne was brought in, which now presides over the chapel.

Currently, this chapel is the mausoleum of the Count of Puertohermoso. The tomb in the centre holds the remains of the priest Luís de Soto Torres-Lineros, protector of the Collegiate Church.
