Osuna on film: The perfect setting for many films

Osuna, with its elegance, monumental beauty and artistic and natural heritage, has often been used as a setting for films, short films, television commercials and advertising. Calle San Pedro, which is home to a large number of palaces, was the location chosen by Franco Zeffirelli for the filming of Callas Forever (2001), the monumental area and the interior of the Collegiate Church were chosen by Vicente Aranda for his particular Carmen in 2002, Álvaro Begines shot his short film Engaños that same year in our town, and the Belgian television reality show De Andalusische Droom in 2009, among others.

The Collegiate Church and the exteriors of this monumental area, the spectacular Calle San Pedro and the natural surroundings of El Coto Las Canteras have lent their beauty to these film shoots and continue to be used, along with others such as the century-old Osuna bullring, for other productions, most notably the filming of the fifth season of the television series Game of Thrones (2014), an American blockbuster with millions of followers around the world, has put Osuna on the international map. In addition, the fictional series produced entirely in Andalusia, set in the final years of the Roman Empire, called “Year 400” (2008), in which our city was the nerve centre of the comedy, and was filmed in El Coto Las Canteras and the Plaza de Toros.

In addition to filming series and short films, the bullring has been the setting for important advertising shoots, such as those for Malaga fashion designer Moncho Heredia, the flamenco fashion shoot for the Malaga-based firm Guadalupe Moda Flamenca and, internationally, the photo report carried out by the prestigious American magazine Sports Illustrated, which has a circulation of 35 million copies per year, with Irina Shayk as the model and choosing our bullring as the main setting. The bullring also hosted the ‘#SevillaBaila’ project by the ON Dance Studios school, which aimed to bring together dance, culture and the cities of Osuna and Seville. Directed by choreographer Gsus Villáu, known for his time as a Funky teacher on the Cuatro TV programme ‘Fama ¡A Bailar!’, and carried out in collaboration with the Osuna Town Council and the Seville Film Office.

In 2019, Osuna was the setting for the film «Adiós» by Seville-born director Paco Cabezas, with three Goya Award nominations and featuring prestigious actors such as Mario Casas, Natalia de Molina, Carlos Bardem and Ruth Díaz. The location chosen for filming the scenes was the old church of Santa Catalina, located on Calle Sevilla.

In addition, that same year, Osuna hosted the filming of the Andalusian film «Los Hijos de San Luis», recorded on the Via Sacra, in Osuna Town Hall, the crypt of La Merced Church, the municipal cemetery, the Collegiate Church, the Palace of the Marquis of La Gomera, the University Auditorium and in various natural settings in our surroundings.
